Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
