Our Premier Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Place.

On the surface, Lux may look more like a difficult academic quiz than a new popular music record from a musician whose last single featured a global pop star. Split into four different movements and performed in 13 languages, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album that delves into female mystery, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently by way of the lens of different women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward here, carried by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear rather modest.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux succeeds in escape overly academic posturing feels almost a miracle, with sole credit going to the artist. While this is not her first album to blend the past and modern styles, its ambitions feel far higher on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. The element that really raises her fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be a core sense of fun. Similar to the legendary artist at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This playful energy comes forth clearly on a stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four minutes. Then, everything drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo thuds in with comedic impact. The track immediately shifts into the wild single featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from none other than Björk.

"The magic with Lux is that the listener never quite understand—nor wish to predict—where it is going to next."

Nearly each track concludes in a completely different point than where it started. One moment examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating into digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her previous trap-infused work begins out moody and brooding, with prowling beats, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth its rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

A key balancing act on the album is navigating the line of radical experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is little surprise that it has become her first release to break into the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in English swells on a chorus that seems to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals skyward. This feat gets echoed by a different powerful track that grows and contracts, weaving layered tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It eschews solipsism for sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep well of buried gems that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While other big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record is a sumptuous feast where the characters around it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter between discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
