The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of his transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
