The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
